for column headers, i had been working on a proposal for a different solution to this issue. i don't think aria-label/aria-labelledby is the right thing to do here, per what jamie was alluding to...

@bkardell it's a complicated pattern, and is often in the fucked state.

@mayank mmm.... i really don't have the bandwidth to get into that, but i really disagree with encouraging people to do redundant work to work around how macOS behaves.

if you point out a typo to scott, he's going to want to fix it.

but when he fixes it, he's going to re-read what he wrote.
