Anyone #UX folks finding a design-ish instance? I've found a nice well run instance social.coop that seems well run and financed. I doesn't appear to have ANY design focus, but hey, you can't have everything....

mastodon.design seems nice but is appears to be mostly french (which is fine! just language issues)

hci.social seems lovely but I worry they are going to get hammered when the CHI community wakes up to mastodon.

@303 I think of an instance more like an ISP: a place that is well run and unlikely to go away. This is especially true as moving accounts causes you to archive all of your content (which too many think isn't a big deal)

So I'm applying to a server that strongly encourages a small payment every month and has a strong governance model.

@crystal read my kids a book
@bartsz I've been wondering the same thing! Right now, I'm observing #UX to be getting the most action.
@BalooUriza @[email protected] I don't wish to drag this on too much but joinmastodon.org is FAR from adequate to the task. The vast majority of instances are nearly identical, every time I've tried to use it I get a HUGE list of instances to choose from. But to be fair, I'd argue it's mostly a supply issue as most instances in fact ARE nearly identical (some hobbyist kicking the tires). What I'd like to see is a way for well run instances to stand out (funding, by-laws, governance, etc)
How I'm treating every change I make to Mastodon right now #UX
@bigelow @alex @slightlyoff Performance is always a tricky (and emotional) issue. I'm sure there is LOT to unpack. I'm just saying that mastodon.social, as web page is quite pokey atm and I wonder if it's *all* federation overhead. (However, I don't wish to discount Alex's experience in this at all)

@BalooUriza @[email protected] and that's an excellent alternative to our current problem. I personally am looking forward to trade associations creating instances as well for the same reason.

That's all I'm saying: have a) a reasonable default (like an ISP) or b) a trusted name to go to are important helping people sign up.

But we shouldn't wait! There are small things we could start now: server guidelines, better help pages, better ways to show unique attributes of instances, etc.

@slightlyoff Given the hammering that Mastodon is getting with new users, I can't help but think of your comments about React and how it's likely causing so much pain with the extra server overhead.

@louvellyn @aallan

My thinking about using Mastodon is evolving, initially I followed a bunch of hashtags.

Now with the Adv Web UI I can be more deliberate with columns of hashtags which I like.

It's just trying to get them OUT of my home timeline that is problematic. Seems completely unresponsive to everything you've suggested.
