I am proud to present GlobalTalk Chat 1.2, taking it from a rushed #MARCHintosh hack-job to something I'd be proud to release as shareware 30 years ago!

The headline update is it now allows anyone to host their own room! And it works on any AppleTalk network, not just #GlobalTalk

Get it on BaroNet, or Macintosh Garden https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/globaltalk-chat

And for anyone who has been curious how it all works, documented source code is available! https://github.com/kalleboo/GlobalTalk-Chat

I started elementary (the open source project) as a high school student. When we were building the first versions of our desktop environment, one of our core developers was in high school and his parents accompanied him to the Ubuntu Developer Summit. How many things we have today wouldn’t exist if young people weren’t allowed to participate? The cost of not creating spaces that we can safely share with young people is too high

really happy to have discovered something hiding in plain sight for several years: robyn & rand miller's original Myst pitch document from 1991.

it's a succinct work of art in itself. i'm surprised at how much of the world design was already on paper.

as all of the copies found elsewhere online are heavily compressed webp/jpeg, i've uploaded the robyn's original PNGs to IA here:

A "Gateway LC 2" popped up on eBay this morning, and I was quite surprised to see what appears to be a Gateway model from around 2000-2001 which I have never heard of! Indeed, the only other evidence I can find online is one YouTube video from 2015.

Looking at the photos, it appears to be a _severely_ cost-reduced model. In addition, the box appears to have an "As Seen On TV" label?! Other interesting bits include a Samsung copyright on POST.

Has anyone heard of this?

And here it is, the #MARCHintosh #GlobalTalk Canvas 2026 timelapse. Thank you to everyone who participated, it was lots of fun to host!
People of #marchintosh : come and join the Severed workers in Macrodata Refinement at LUMON Industries. Be a part of something mysterious and important. If you finish the file before anyone else, you may choose from a music-dance experience, or a catered office luncheon with fresh fruit and an egg bar. Do well this quarter, and you can earn a waffle party. If you choose to quit, your resignation may be denied. This app was made by Marcio Teixeira and can be downloaded on Github: https://github.com/marciot/MacLumon

And it’s time for my fourth and final #MARCHintosh project for 2026, TalkCrawler AD. It’s an After Dark Module for TalkCrawler that will let you watch #GlobalTalk leisurely scroll past in one of two different styles

There is a standalone version as well if you don't want to install After Dark

Note you will need to run a re-scan in TalkCrawler Lite 1.4 (just released) before it can show anything

Available on landisk/Blackbird on BaroNet. Video in first reply.

#GlobalTalk.wiki has its first online “customer”!

@scj has set up a sub wiki for his Purrtopia zone (and other info, too!).

You can find it at https://purrtopia.globaltalk.wiki

I’ve also placed previews of all the theme templates I have installed, you can find that on the QuickStart page at https://globaltalk.wiki/doku.php?id=quickstart

It shows the current state of the main wiki, but in each of the installed themes.

That will likely help sub-wiki owners to choose their preferred theme (and I may change the main wiki’s too).

Welcome to PurrTopia! [PurrTopia GlobalTalk Zone]

@bytex64 WELL THEN ... have we got great news for you!

Go to https://globaltalk.network and sign up with whatever farking email address you want.

It's just been stood up this week and already has ~20 registrants, but conveniently it also pulls in ALL the addresses from the Google Sheet. This site also pre-resolves and caches the IP list. Once you're registered, you can put the private address into the AIRConfig utility, and instantly and painlessly populate the AIR routing table with ALL the nodes from both sources. And best of all: you can log in and edit / manage your networks and endpoints any time, day or night.

Disclaimer: I'm sure you are aware that because of how #GlobalTalk is built — point-to-point routing — you can only monitor what people send to you, not the entire network. And you can't promote your node to über-router, no matter how hard you try. AppleTalk routing predates OSPF by a few years.

My #GlobalTalk Netatalk server's SSD decided to wait until #MARCHintosh to fail. Rude! But a great excuse to build a new server :)
