Good news from Kaja Kallas: “It's official: #Estonia has legalised marriage equality. We join other Nordic nations with this historic decision.

I'm proud of my country. We're building a society where everyone’s rights are respected and people can love freely.

The decision will enter into force from 2024.”

Happy Juneteenth. On June 19, 1865, Major General Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, backed by 2,000 troops and announced that all enslaved people, mostly Blacks, were free. The Emancipation Proclamation freeing them had been issued two and a half years earlier. Many enslaved people were not released until late in the year.

Blacks in Texas are still routinely and systematically deprived of their right to vote, have meaningful representation, and other inalienable rights. Happy Juneteenth.

Today, we recognize Juneteenth, a day that marks a significant step forward in our ongoing struggle for equality and justice.

As Opal Lee, "Grandmother of Juneteenth" says: “Freedom really means vigilance to me. I want everybody to be aware that none of us are free until we are all free.”
Juneteenth is a time to reflect on the progress made as well as the work that still lies ahead in dismantling systemic oppression and amplifying the voices and experiences of the Black community.

Together, we can and must work to pave the way toward a future where everyone can thrive, regardless of their background. And such a future is possible as long as we remain resolved to build a society firmly rooted in equality, justice, and shared humanity.

Juneteenth should remind us that human trafficking was legal. Slavery was legal. Jim Crow was legal. The US Govt paying reparations to white enslavers who lost their “property” but not to the formerly enslaved who lost their lives, was legal. Indeed, prison slavery is still legal today.

Do not let legality & power be your measure of morality & justice.

I've been speaking and writing lately about how tech companies try to shift the discussion on misinformation, polarization, harassment, etc., away from the systems and structures that are inherently toxic and toward questions of individual behavior.

This way they can blame their own users for any pathology and steer clear of calls for systemic change.
