The River Mill Dam has been in continuous production of hydroelectric power since 1911, when its construction was funded by the Portland Railway, Light and Power Company.
One of three Ambursen-type dams built west of the Mississippi and the only one to survive.
At one point it supplied half of Portland's power needs; these days it generates enough power for more than 10,000 homes.
