Meaning & origin of word 'Oṇam':
'Oṇam' comes from Sanskrit śroṇā(श्रोण).
According to Hinduism, śroṇā/śravaṇā/(श्रोण/श्रवण) is birth Nakshatra of Vishnu(श्रोणम् > ओणम्)
Bhāgavata Purāṇa (8.18) says Vishnu took birth on Shravana Dvadashi.
This is exact date of Onam
