one of the most common themes of masto for the past several years has been people talking about their isolation, often self-imposed, and the desire to recover confidence lost over the years. people often come here for a shelter from the storm.

this nhk episode of Hometown Stories (25 minutes) follows around a few satsuma mandarin harvesters for one season, as they try (and succeed!) in understanding confusion and aimlessness their lives, and where to go next.

i was surprised by the intimacy and candour with the workers. it's heartwarming and affirming, without looking for cheap self-help answers or maudlin storylines. just real people being honest as they try to figure out their lives, and succeed at it with the help of new friends found along the way.

perhaps a vision of masto as it could be.
