I still miss the days of Google+, I met so many awesome indie RPG developers there. These days I mostly hang around obscure discords and play comfy building/farming sims.

Unfortunately no.

Toxic masculinity and racism / xenophobia are not the same.

If we were worshipping toxic masculinity, then we would hold Khabib in higher regard than Conor. Khabib is tougher, more manly, lives a more ascetic and spartan lifestyle, and conforms even more rigidly to harmful self-imposed gender roles and rules for conduct appropriate for a man.

We're worshipping something even worse.

This is going to be iiving rent free in my head for a long time, I reckon

Office has a censor filter in internal comms to replace swear words with other terms. Added a rule changing "AI" to "my cat", so we get "According to my cat..." and "I asked my cat and it said..."

How much do you worry about what others think of your creative work?

I write for a living; if readers (and editors) don't like my work, by and by I'll starve.

Having said that, you don't have to please everyone—and indeed you shouldn't! (So Nazis and TERFs can get in the fucking sea before I'll bend the knee to their diseased and odious beliefs.)

Revenge is a dish best served code

"Your use case is, there's a fourteen year old in an emergency room at 3 AM. English is their second or maybe fourth language. They have a battered school Chromebook or a hand-me-down Android device that was the cheapest thing on the market six years ago or a PS Vita their parents don't even realize has a web browser, and they're trying to educate themselves in the middle of the single most terrifying night they've ever experienced. Your site needs to work for that person at that moment."

I've spent most of my adult life writing code—not because I had to, but because I love the process. And I've taught hundreds of students (thousands through courses) to love it too. There's a beauty in expressing human reasoning in code, just as there is in mathematics. You can put care into even the most mundane of tasks.

I know not everyone feels that way about it. I know for many, maybe most, it's just a job. It's just business.

But god damn, we created a wholly new form of expression here. I don't think it's that different from others. It just sells better, so "art" is hard to assign to it.

I still think it can be beautiful. But the beauty comes first from the creator's hand.

Battery care 1/n: You have a Nickel-Cadmium or Nickel-Metal-Hydride battery: use a dedicated smart charger for that battery type, or throw it in the bin. You might remember how the Nickel batteries in older power tools were shit -- actually the batteries were okay and the chargers were garbage. All that business about "you have to run them flat before charging or *dramatic chord* The Memory Effect"? Bullshit. The cheap unregulated chargers relied on a fixed time for charging, if you forgot to disconnect, you killed the battery, as overcharging the cells shortens their life and causes “voltage depression”. Nowadays smart chargers can detect full charge and cut off the current automatically. I use this one for AA and AAA NiMH cells, which are about the only remaining useful niche for this chemistry, IMO: https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c2ypv1Wz

That unit also handles lithiums, auto detects the type, and tells you if they are dead.
