Resharing this as we get ever closer to inviting folks in to use the Thunderbird email service: Thundermail.

Use tech that enriches your life, not built to extract from you all that it can.

*Edit*: You can sign up for the waitlist for Thundermail here: https://thundermail.com

Get off Gmail, use Thunderbird (and soon Thundermail).

"Centralised systems were designed with the best of intentions, but were turned against us anyway. And peer-to-peer systems will be exactly the same.

How do we make the next generation of protocols more difficult to weaponise?”

Here’s a clean recording of my #FOSDEM talk “Willow - Protocols for an uncertain future”. This talk was a real labour of love, hope you enjoy it!!!

Can we learn something about how to use tech in a healthy way from... The Amish? I think we can.

What the Amish Can Teach Us About Technology

The Amish don’t shun tech—they choose tools that serve their goals and values. By setting limits, and prioritizing relationships over convenience, they model a path for us. Asking “What do I want my devices to do for me?” not “What can they do?”

What's everyone using for document editing these days?

this is the only post about Mozilla drama you'll get from me, because a) I'm tired, b) I'll be on vacation starting tomorrow evening, c) most of y'all have either already used your brains, or you just want to knee-jerk - which is fine, too.

in any case, don't listen to me, because lots of folks will claim I'm biased anyway (which, tbh, is fair, given I like having a paycheck). so instead, check out this post from a community contributor who isn't paid, and who has no reason to be nice if he doesn't want to be nice:

A Christmas cartoon from my new book of science cartoons PHYSICS FOR CATS. In good bookshops and online now: www.tomgauld.com/comic-books-v2

Tech Cooperative? Lately been thinking about how the Thunderbird (Community) Council being involved in the business of MZLA (the company that develops Thunderbird) - makes us less prone to enshittification.

How could we turn that system into something that is more inclusive of all users? Been fascinated by how Coops democratize the corporation.

I love the "Wrapstodon" feature, so much fun!

I got the The Butterfly archetype!

So many amazing thoughts in this talk. For one, the value created by open source software being $8,000,000,000,000 (that's 8 trillion dollars) is mind blowing.

Also great thoughts on how open source must win in AI.
