I’m sure most sane people would fix a half torn rucksack strap with needle and thread 🪡 but me... I love my staple gun 🤣 let’s see how long this fix lasts...

Some simple spreadsheet research using @OpenAlex and the R package openalexR

Counting from 2020 to 2025, there have been over 58,000 items published under the Subscribe to Open model and it's roughly doubling every year.

I just declined to review for a paywalled/hybrid Wiley journal... and was given absolutely no means of communicating why I declined in the process.

Just a pathway through to: "thanks for letting us know" (byeee!!!)

I was locked and loaded, ready to tell the editor that I don't review for paywalled commercial journals that siphon-off large profit margins from the research ecosystem. I wonder if this 'efficiency' is somewhat deliberate to shield editors from such critique?

Visiting Slovenia next Easter. Anyone been? Looking for inspo...
Ah Microsoft Outlook... is email really that hard?

Anyone good at getting Android phones to do slightly unusual things?

Read on...

When I attach this to my Nothing 3a Pro phone, it kinda works... the USB-A for instance works - I can read&write to a thumb drive.

But I can’t get it to use Internet via RJ45 Ethernet. What do I need to do to get the (Android/Nothing) phone to use Ethernet?

Great to see the inclusivity & recognition of @OpenAlex improve with the recent 'Walden' (codename) data update.

You can compare old vs. new data at the OREO site (OpenAlex Rewrite Eval Overview) https://oreo.openalex.org/

The screenshot I'm looking at here is of country tagging. Over 525,828 works with a Nigerian affiliation tagged now, up from 438,448 in the previous (old) version.

Does Scopus or Web of Science ever give such a transparent overview of changes in their datasets over time?

Imagine a university in a wealthy country where less than 50% of the recent research output is openly accessible to the public?
