Today at @ufz: Together with Anne Jäger, we shared insights from our REGULATE research group @isoewikom on social-ecological groundwater regulation, long-distance water transfers, and groundwater ecosystems. Thanks to Karsten Rinke, Susanne I. Schmidt, and the UFZ team for the inspiring exchange!

Recently, our #REGULATE team met in Schmitten (DE) for a writing retreat! We’re synthesizing insights on social-ecological groundwater regulation—exploring Patterns of Relation (POR) (everyday water practices) and Modes of Regulation (MOR) (norms, power, institutions) across case studies in Croatia, BiH, Germany, Spain & USA.
First manuscript draft: done! 🎉 Now refining for submission.

Thank you all for the inspiring discussions and valuable ideas on how to improve adaptation to water-related extremes in Europe! It’s been fantastic to exchange insights and learn from each other. Looking forward to continuing the conversation and developing new ideas together tomorrow in the beautiful city of Zagreb! #zagreb #waterextremes #europe #drought #flood #pollution #CompoundEvents @isoewikom
Back in Germany after a research trip through California from almond farms to Bay Area startups.
Huge thanks to all experts who shared insights on water! It is the backbone of California’s cities and agriculture, but challenges for ecosystems remain. #SGMA offers lessons for Europe on stakeholder engagement.
Inspired by collaborations across sectors, . Excited to bring these lessons to Europe and keep building bridges in #WaterManagement

From the Central Valley to SF/Berkeley, I’ve met inspiring academics & startup folks rethinking water & agriculture—plus survived my first @Waymo ride (impressed!).
The link between surface/groundwater and the infrastructure sustaining it is massive. California’s blend of tech, policy, and collaboration is an inspiring bundle for water management.
Now in Davis to dive deeper and grateful for the insights—excited to bring them back to Europe!

From San Diego to the Central Valley: The California Aqueduct—heart of the State Water Project—reveals how long-distance water transfers power cities and agriculture. Nowhere is this clearer than in the endless almond orchards, set against the Sierra Nevada’s forested slopes.
Next, I’ll dive into the socio-ecological dynamics and systemic logics of California’s water-agriculture nexus with local experts. Stay tuned for insights!

Kicking off my research journey at the #WesternGroundwaterCongress 2025 in San Diego! As a geographer at @isoewikom I’m diving into the state’s water challenges—especially the #SGMA process.
For Europe, there’s much to learn as we rethink #water management post-2027: funding mechanisms & stakeholder engagement stand out.
Next stop: UC-Davis as a Visiting Scholar to explore water-agriculture links. Excited to connect & share insights #WFD #Groundwater #Sustainability #CaliforniaWater #WaterPolicy
