September 1962 was when I joined the RAF, but yesterday, the 26th October 1962, is the anniversary of when nuclear war between the USA was prevented by the bravery of a Russian naval officer. At the height of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, a Soviet submarine was in international waters off America. It was discovered by US warships which dropped depth charges to try to force it to the surface.
