My power bill goes up every few months; not because my seasonal use changes year to year, but because the power company has a monopoly, and corporations with no competition do this.

Also every few months, the power company sends an appeal for customers to donate money to "help our neighbors".

Here's the thing: I do mutual aid as much as I can, but there's NO FUCKING WAY I would do it through them.

Just like I will never do it through my employer, or Walmart, or any corporation.

After being increasingly ill over the past several years, comic writer Peter David (who also wrote as David Peters), has died.

He leaves behind an impressive body of work, and large medical bills that now fall on his family to pay.

If you can, please donate; if not, please share the GFM for that.

Side note: Mid-Century Modern seems to be flying under the radar. Pilot had some cringey bits, but it has definitely improved with each episode. Makes us laugh consistently. I recommend it.
In the past 7 days I’ve seen Richard Kind do guest bits in Mid-Century Modern, Girls 5Eva, Only Murders in the Building and Poker Face. Either the man is having a moment or all streaming services have been contractually obligated to hire him.
As a historian I feel that I am qualified to say… OH DEAR GODS! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!? WHAT THE FUCK?!?

I can't say I understand why this inkwell from the 16th century was made, but it's well done.

I just found out about these accommodations in fun places / partly in restored historical buildings. Or old train car! But also in super modern things. They are VERY COOL! #visitLuxembourg 😆

Shazam! - 26 November 1985
On this mid-80s youth music show, a fresh faced Russell Crowe is the star turn in his early persona as Russ le Roq (the name change to avoid comparisons with his famous cricketing cousins Martin and Jeff). With a hint of an Elvis sneer, Crowe performs 'What's The Difference' with his band Roman Antix, and is interviewed by presenter Phillipa Dann.

Between this and that absolutely idiotic Abundance article by Jonathan Chait, I have had my fill of dumbass think pieces for the weekend. Gee, why did Rachel Carson and Ralph Nader start public interest pressure groups, Jonathan? Was it to hold back our glorious progress? Or was it because CARS WERE EXPLODING and POLLUTION WAS HORRIBLE and ENTIRE URBAN NEIGHBORHOODS were being bulldozed down, thousands of residents evicted, in order to sell the property for a DOLLAR AN ACRE to a MAJOR CORPORATION? (I’m thinking of Boston’s West End here, but pretty much every major US city has a story like this.) And you want to RETURN TO THAT? Jesus.

I am so goddamn tired of pundits that have extremely narrow understandings of one field making grand pronouncements about everything. You’re an idiot outside of your specialized domain. Sit the hell down.

(Apparently I need the Internet taken away from me for a week.)

Man, this cockamamie prediction of the future of AI is a shining example of “Americans have lost all understanding of how manufacturing works“:
https://ai-2027.com/
The reason that Trump’s whole “iPhones need to be built in America” idea falls flat is that we don’t have the tools to build the iPhone here. Not only that, we don’t even have the tools TO BUILD THE TOOLS to build an iPhone here. We are, like, three layers of tooling away from being able to build one.

Building factories also involves, well, building factories. It takes wood and metal and concrete and architectural plans and…and according to this piece of science fiction, AGI will exist in 2027 and by 2030 it will have built an army of robots AS WELL AS creating enough consumer goods to lull the world into complacency while it builds bioweapons to wipe out all of humanity. By 2030.

And then there are the rare earths and other things that have to be mined to build the things, all of which are still human-intensive…and by 2027 all this stuff will be magically as available as water?

People really, REALLY do not understand how manufacturing works.

AI 2027

A research-backed AI scenario forecast.

just make public transit free

fully fund it using federal funds

it's a fucking drop in the bucket that would predominantly essentially put money back in the pockets of those most in need and it would further incentivize not using cars-

oh
