So excited to see what emerges from this praying mantis cocoon I found! It is actually called an "ootheca" and is a stiff, foam-like egg case produced by the female in the fall. It protects 50–300+ eggs through winter.

The wildlife, especially the neighborhood cats, love our pond. I snapped a photo Frack having a drink from it, under a log we placed for birds to land and bathe. 🥰
