We should not wait until the next pandemic or natural disaster to prepare scientists to speak.

When science is understandable, we all win. I've started a national petition calling on all institutions of higher education, and their accreditors, to require science communication and public engagement training for all STEM degrees.

@raventhesciencemaven has created a petition to make communicating about science an integral part of learning science. You'd think that'd be a Duh! thing, but not so much. Especially in our current climate being able to discuss what you do and explain it so a non-expert can understand probably means the difference between being able to continue doing what you're doing...
