Australia's off-shore detention for asylum seekers is cruel beyond measure. Australia is paying a staggering $1.5m per year per person detained - but the asylum seekers are starving. Most of the money goes to a US operator of for-profit prisons.

They have done nothing wrong. They are literally being punished for daring to seek a better life.

The enormous elephant in the room regarding the increasing demands on our electricity grid is simply this: we don't actually _need_ AI. It's not in any way a public need for public good. It's a private and public want. If you turned off every major GAI tomorrow nothing would demonstrably change except for our power consumption would go down and nvidia's stock would crash.

Addendum: I am talking here about the slop machines, which are the drivers of this overconsumption. I fully recognize that generative systems are being used for legitimate purposes and research, I literally help run one of them.

Email as a medium of communication has become so sketchy and polluted that management and HR have to regularly assure us via other communication channels that an email purporting to be from the business is, in fact, from the business, and not a scam or a phishing attempt.
