Science writer covering nano to astro via bio, but mostly bio these days (Latest book: Intertwined - from insects to icebergs, JHUP 2024). Known for cycling around Oxford with a cello on my back and/or half a dozen other instruments in my baskets. Rescuing and restoring unloved violins. Writing musical family history memoir and digging up old photos and postcards. Mostly tooting in English, but might also use French, German, Spanish, Galician if and when required.

@julian Oxford obviously has a lot of people coming in and staying for a limited time only. We can accommodate those passing players very easily but also have to work constantly to replace them when they leave again ...
@julian Hi thanks for asking, yes we are trying to get a few more people to attend regularly. We are viable in that we can play the material in a recognisable form with an average of 12 people, but we would obviously sound more orchestral if we had over 20, hence the attempts to create excitement and FOMO with the special feature evenings which I aim to do once a term. They aren't pulling in huge numbers but for some people they have provided the motivation not to put it off.

A reminder that storms are thermodynamic heat engines. They use temperature difference to generate “work” (ie wind and motion). So hot seas amplify their intensity.

going through the #BBC #Oxford updates of the last 7 days and realised that they completely ignored the #OxfordFolkFestival ?! They had a story on the drum&bass bike thing - probably thought that was enough cultural news for one weekend ...

At least 18% of gray whales documented in San Francisco Bay between 2018 and 2025 later died there. Ship strikes are the leading cause and the population isn’t rebounding as it once did.

Two marine biologists explain why this isn’t normal:

Gray whales are dying in San Francisco Bay at an alarming rate – this isn’t normal

In the past, the gray whale population recovered fairly quickly. But data on baby whales show that isn’t happening, and a new study finds an alarmingly high mortality rate.
