Fascinating analysis from the Economist: “In the four days after Elon Musk took the keys to Twitter, Republican members of Congress collectively gained around 470,000 followers. The opposite was true for Democrats in both chambers. Their House and Senate representatives lost 420,000 followers.”

How will Elon Musk shape Twitter?

Data show the platform is already changing

I understand the urge to rebuild your network like you used to have it on Twitter using a tool. But it will never be the same, and that's ok. Let it be something new if you can.
Learning (so far) that by #SelfHosting you lose:
• followership viewability
• a useful Local timeline
• your toots don't migrate
But you gain:
• a useful Federated timeline
• total control, independence
• fine-tuned instancing
Am I getting this right? #TwitterMigration
I think I might take the plunge and #selfhost on a private instance. I've read the basic guides of setting up the alias and moving followers over. But what else do I need to know? Do I need to set-up relays? What will I miss about being on the big instance?

If you're part of the #twittermigration, it may seem strange the people use CWs so much here.

But, CWs are really helpful. So much of our world is overwhelming, and feed presentation can bombard our nervous systems with triggers.

CWs give people time and space to engage with that they have the resources to engage with. It gives them agency.

I follow news and politics AND it's helpful for my PTSD to have the chance to take a deep breath *before* I see a post.

Hello #TwitterMigration friends, ideas for curating your timeline, which is quite like #gardening: what you plant will be what grows here for you.

1. If you mainly follow others who arrived with you, you depend on them staying. Balance with people who post regularly and there will be new growth here when you check.

2. Follow people who boost others. The serendipity of their associations will seed new ideas for you.

3. It’s a new home: you don’t need the same garden you had in your old home.

#MastodonAdmin question: Can you set up an instance that only allows members to join from a list of specific email address domains?
Monetization vs. Moderation
Social media that doesn’t eradicate democracy, marginalize the unprivileged, and torch the planet is fucking expensive since monetization is optimized for overt fascism but moderation involves paying humans to be humans to each other which is not very profitable, it turns out.
How's it going over here? I'm still learning the ropes. Was on KQED Forum (radio show) today talking about our Noema article with Adrienne Williams and they asked me about #TwitterMigration. What other platforms are y'all on? Dusted up my Linked In but who has time to be everywhere? The Twitter dumpster fire seems to only be getting worse.
