Phong-Hóa, first published in 1932, was a groundbreaking satire journal in Vietnam journalism and visual culture. Created by the Self-Reliant Literary Group (Tự Lực Văn Đoàn), it rejected the rigid, colonial-aligned style of earlier periodicals like Nam Phong, which prioritized academic discussions and moralistic essays. Instead, Phong-Hóa embraced humour, satire, and a modern use of Quốc ngữ (national script).

Phong Hóa, issue 71, November 3, 1933, illustrated by Lemur. It depicts a group of figures performing a tảo mộ (tomb-sweeping) ritual — not for their ancestors, but for rival contemporary journals that the journal deemed outdated. The tombstones bear the names of these publications, symbolizing their obsolescence in the face of modernity.

New typeface: Phông by Khải Quang Nguyễn ⬛️🔲

Phông is a typeface inspired by the unique lettering found in Phong-Hóa, a Vietnamese satirical journal from the early 20th century. While Phong-Hóa was known for its bold, hand-drawn lettering – particularly in its crossword puzzles – Phông distills these elements into a modern, functional type system with five weights, two widths and extensive Latin and Vietnamese language support.
