#Storytelling in #SciComm: Why are some stories remembered while others are forgotten?

The answer may lie in our cognitive biases that cause humans to attend to certain types of information more than others. For instance, we are more likely to pay attention to
🔹 information that affects us *personally*,
🔹 information that *surprises* us, or
🔹 information that might cause *danger* to us.

What a wonderful little #SciComm resource by the American Society for Microbiology!

Very helpful tips on how to eliminate jargon, connect with the #media, and communicate about your #research:

Be sure to check out the microbial jargon cheat sheet! It may seem unnecessary, but you'd be surprised how often scientists entirely forget about the public meaning of a word once they get used to the scientific meaning of it. Don't make that mistake!

You're doing #research that you think should inform policy, but don't know how to best share it with policymakers?

Gentle #SciComm reminder:

The #media structures a story differently than #scientists do. They deliver the bottom line and the "so what?" before going into the details. This helps raise interest enormously.

It's like a friend beginning to share a crazy story with what he had for breakfast vs. directly delivering the punch line "Guess what, I just witnessed a robbery!" (followed by how that came to be)...

#SEO for papers?

In their #preprint, Pottier et al. argue that in order to maximize the discoverability & impact of scientific publications, authors should optimize keywords for search engines.

And because readers gauge the relevance of a study by briefly scanning the abstract, it better be well-structured, clear and following a narrative.

The study, including a practical guide to authors:

Nature survey among #scientists who were, or still are, users of #Twitter/X:

"More than half reported that they have reduced the time they spend on the platform in the past 6 months. Just under 7% have stopped using it altogether. Roughly 46% have joined other #SocialMedia platforms, such as Mastodon, #Bluesky, #Threads & #TikTok.

"The most popular alternative social-media site that respondents mentioned opening accounts with was #Mastodon."

Thousands of scientists are cutting back on Twitter, seeding angst and uncertainty

A Nature survey reveals scientists’ reasons for leaving the social-media platform now known as X, and what they are doing to build and maintain a sense of community.

"If you view #scientists as an opposing social group, you might think they pose threats to your group’s political power, economic resources, or values and worldview, and want to take actions to prevent that."

"When individuals are personally unfamiliar with scientists, they may form impressions from what they hear or see in #media, thus representation in news coverage is likely to impact how audiences perceive scientists.”
