Old Skool Internet geek, particularly DNS. Pronouns: us/y’all.

My wife is texting me. She’s trying to update her W4 and the hospital’s instructions on how to do so are hilariously institutional.

“The PDF will download to your computer. Do not open it in your browser. You *must* open it in Windows File Explorer. When you open it in Windows File Explorer you must use Adobe Acrobat Reader.”

My wife is like “do Macs have Windows File Explorer” and I’m like “please just let me help you when you get home.”

Very important kitchen discovery: You can use a potato peeler on a block of refrigerated cooking butter to produce thin slices of butter for toast.

This is revolutionary. You can lay the slices on the toast and they soften almost instantly. Incredible.

Systematically finding bugs in Python C extensions (575+ confirmed so far)

Systematically finding bugs in Python C extensions (575+ confirmed so far) Greetings all, Python’s C extension ecosystem contains a large class of subtle correctness bugs that are rarely caught by testing or linters. Over the past two weeks, I’ve been running a systematic analysis across 44 extensions (~960K LOC), resulting in 575+ confirmed bugs (~10-15% false positive rate after review, ~140 reproduced from Python) and fixes already merged in 14 projects including Pillow, h5py, Cython, lxml,...

Cheetahs. Tigers. Jaguars. Pumas. Panthers. Snow leopards. How big is a big cat? And who decides? Let’s ask the charming wildlife biologist, science communicator, and Megafelinologist Dr. Imogene Cancellare. She shares tales of remote field work, snow-capped mountains, narrow escapes, camera trap re

In my hippyish days, I used to believe, or at least hope, that expanding one's consciousness and opening the mind's eye could help most people be somehow better, you know?

So if there's one thing the tech bros have taught me, it's that it's possible to do drugs wrong.

@ianbetteridge As someone who is forced to use WordPress to support friends, I couldn't agree more with you, and not with Dave.
@lindsey If you're feeling particularly fruity, I have a friend who likes to do grafting. When I visited her earlier this week, she was adding grafts to a neighbor's stone fruit trees. The result is a tree that gives different fruits over a longer season. (My back yard has never been very successful for any kind of fruit other than lemons...)

Edited: This is not a new character; it's been in Unicode since Unicode 1.1, meaning essentially forever.

Reworded some to avoid making it trivial to find who I'm talking about.

Someone posted something like "I saw someone talking about alt.tv.simpsons and I didn't know you could have '.simpsons' like .com" and I crumbled to dust right there.

@jpsays Ouch. And congrats on your not having to deal with that day-to-day any more!
