Teams in the Democratic Republic of the Congo & Uganda have now shared the first sequences from the current Ebola (Bundibugyo virus) outbreak using Pathoplexus, just days after cases were confirmed.

Pathoplexus | Ebola: Rapid response to the Bundibugyo virus outbreak in the DRC and Uganda

Pathoplexus is a new, open-source database dedicated to the efficient sharing of human viral pathogen genomic data, fostering global collaboration and public health response.

6/ 🙏We are grateful to everyone involved in caring for patients, testing samples, coordinating response, and sharing data. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by the outbreak, and involved in the response efforts in DRC and Uganda.
5/ The process of adding BDBV to Pathoplexus, from beginning technical work, to EB vote, to launch, took about 7 hours. We’re proud of our ability to be able to enable data sharing for new outbreaks in such a short time, and hope it enables rapid public health response.
4/ This is an ongoing outbreak of high interest, with few sequences available. In such a situation, Restricted-Use sequences are highly unlikely to be ‘background’ sequences. Please ensure you follow our Data Use Terms in preprints/publications & co-author with other submitters.
3/ Sequences shared as Restricted-Use are available for all unpublished public-health uses (dashboards, reports, open analyses, website) with appropriate credit as outlined in our Data Use Terms - but their status provides protection from publication before the original submitters can publish.

2/ The addition of BDBV to Pathoplexus was fast-tracked by our Exec Board today, to aid data sharing when sequences are available.

Pathoplexus lets sequences to be uploaded as Open (immediately public + sent to INSDC) or Restricted-Use (up to 1 year) - to encourage fast sharing.

1/ 🚀 Pathoplexus now supports Bundibugyo virus (BDBV), a species of Ebolavirus.

BDBV has been associated with past outbreaks of Ebola in the DR Congo and Uganda, and a case has been reported today during response to the current Ebola outbreak.

Since launching support for the Andes virus species of hantavirus two days ago, we have already received submissions from four countries' sequencing teams. This is a testament to the rapid response of researchers, sharing real-time data. Read more in our news post: https://pathoplexus.org/news/2026-05-11-andes-virus
Pathoplexus | Andes virus: supporting response to the current hantavirus outbreak

Pathoplexus is a new, open-source database dedicated to the efficient sharing of human viral pathogen genomic data, fostering global collaboration and public health response.

6/ 🙏 Huge thanks to everyone involved in caring for patients, testing samples, coordinating response, and sharing data; as well as to the Pathoplexus team and Exec Board for working at speed for this launch.

5/ Uploading to Pathoplexus is as easy as dragging-and-dropping files into the web browser - or use the API to upload as part of a workflow.

We will be continuing to improve ANDV on Pathoplexus in the coming days and weeks.
