@Chescheese and I were speaking to our child the other day about the importance of history. Of course the inevitable "history is for learning, not repeating" came up, but what we found more relevant was the lesser discussed second half of that point: that history means nothing if you're not paying attention to what's going on in the present.

If you only ever pay attention to yourself and your immediate surroundings, you'll never come to the right conclusions.

The first gift @Chescheese ever bought me was this pair of earrings: a flower and a pearl. It was the best gift I've ever received, and it came from someone I was only just getting to know. I'll never forget how it made me feel.

All at once, I felt understood, justified, and loved not in spite of who I am but because of it. We had never spoken about my gender identity at this point, she just *knew*. She saw me in a way I never felt seen before. I knew for sure in that moment--this is the one.
