Many people think the Fediverse is just “another social app” trying to compete with Twitter or Instagram.
It isn’t.
The Fediverse is more like email.
You don’t sign up for “the email app.”
You choose Gmail, Outlook, or another provider, and you can still talk to everyone else. The app doesn’t own your identity.
You do.
That’s what the Fediverse does for social media.
You join one server, but you are not locked in. You can follow and talk to people on others servers.
Initially, l was thinking about the fediverse purely by traditional metrics, the Fediverse looks tiny. 15 million users vs. Twitter's 500M+ or Instagram's 2B+.
That's because like most people l was valuing it like a social network. It's not.
The Fediverse is infrastructure. Like email. Like RSS. Like the web itself.
Nobody asks "how many users does email have?" Email is a protocol. Billions of people use it across thousands of providers.
ActivityPub is the email of social media.
I didn’t just read about it.
I felt it.
No algorithm pushing urgency.
No pressure to perform.
No sense of being managed.
Just people. Timelines. Choice.
That shift did something to me.
It made me curious about what the social web could feel like if it actually respected users.
So I started building.
Oweo.app is my contribution to that direction a reimagined way to experience the fediverse, where control lives with the user again.
What drew you into the fediverse?
For me, it wasn’t ideology.
I didn’t even know much about it yet.

At the time, I didn’t have language for what I was searching for.
