🗣️Wrapping up the year in Hamburg with a presentation on ‘data autonomy’ at the workshop ‘Democracy, Epistemology and AI: Fostering Liveable Digital Futures’.

According to the FT Donald Trump just announced that there will be one federal US AI Regulation (Executive Order). The latest backlash for those who believed Europe can set the global standard in this domain. It seems like the whole discussion is just beginning…again

🆕📝🚨 The Uneven Impact of Big Data in Science: A Literature Review and Reflective Examination of Big Data in Data-Intensive Disciplines

Big Data has revolutionized scientific research. 🔬🌟

From machine learning to groundbreaking discoveries, data-intensive disciplines are leading the way. However, the impact of Big Data varies across fields. Our latest study explores these differences & highlights the need for ongoing discussion. #BigData #Science #Research #Innovation

⬇️First signs of enforcement of the EU AI Act, and the complexities that come with it! With the Dutch votes coming up and so many undecided voters, how do chatbots affect political opinion?

As this relates to free speech and shaping the political opinion in the public sphere, this seems also deserving of a deeper analysis on whether the AIA overlaps with the Digital Services Act, as especially OpenAI and certainly x also qualify as (very large) platforms.

A day in the name of digital (data) autonomy!

Yesterday afternoon, I had the honor of joining an expert workshop at the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW) in Amsterdam to exchange views on how to make universities in the Netherlands better data-driven institutions with less dependency on Big Tech!

After taking the 🚆 back to Groningen, I joined our event on big tech dependency & gaining more autonomy at the Forum! We had a super interactive discussion with an extremely nerdy crowd (💛🤖)!

App-ocalypse📱🤯 During the European Reserachers’ Night 2025 last Friday at Forum Groningen I had the pleasure of carrying out a workshop with moderator Rutger Middendorp.

WhatsApp, TikTok, Chrome, Google Maps, Excel and even ChatGPT – we use them every day and can hardly imagine life without them. But what if we had to? The creativity of the nerdy Groningen crowd to respond to the 4 challenges surprised me. Thanks for organizing this to all colleagues!

🎉👏🎓1 day, 2 locations, 2 successfully defended PhDs!

Congratulations to Xiaoyao Han for defending her thesis, last Thursday in the morning. In the afternoon, the fabulous Lucas Haitsma PhD defended his thesis.

Take a look at their amazing work!

🆕 research project: #AI is EVERYWHERE, but what does it MEAN FOR YOU?

In ‘DECIDE’ (Democratizing AI – Empowering Citizens through Transparent Decision-making) we will work on AI Regulation & Governance to carry out legal analysis, surveys, discussing with stakeholder groups and reaching out to marginalised groups in order to bridge the gap between what frameworks such as the EU AI Act promise, and what that means for people.

🆕📝🚨🌊 Ever feel like you've seen it all before? Welcome to the world of tech trends where every wave brings a sense of déjà vu! 🌊

From the rise of Big Data to the (latest) AI revolution, history keeps repeating itself in the most fascinating ways. Organisations pour resources in trends and buzzwords, without knowing whether investments actually pay off, or emerging technologies make an actual difference for their business.🤖💥
