The Battle of Hafrsfjorden took place in the fjord Hafrsfjorden, southwest of Stavanger in Rogaland, sometime in the late 9th century. According to the saga tradition, it was a naval battle between forces led by Harald Fairhair and various petty kings and chieftains from Agder, Vestlandet and Viken who were his opponents. Harald Fairhair won the battle and gained control of the sea route from the city of Tønsberg to the Sognefjord. This is the early beginnings of the Kingdom of Norway.
