Comics as thinking. Eisner winner. Unflattening from HarvardUP (http://bit.ly/1vENIO7). Former Detroiter/NYer/YYC/now assoc prof SFSU-Comics Studies!
thanks to my Brazilian publisher, Rogério de Campos - my minicomic syllabus is now available in Portuguese! Some trickiness reformatting for the translation, but glad this is now available! Whole minicomic in both languages, standalone Ai statement, all on my site https://spinweaveandcut.com/fall-2025-syllabi/
Tonight! And while I won’t have books - I’m contractually forbidden from selling them - I will give away biking and my syllabus minicomics, and teasers of Unflattening with a sneak peek at Nostos!
I feel a little awkward self promoting this thing people have to pay to come to, but I never talk about my work in my own town (always have to get in an airplane) - so I thought this might be fun. Whatever the case, I hope someone comes - I don’t drink alcoholic so I’m a bit lost in a brewery…
If you’re in SF-area, the kind folks of @profsandpints are hosting me at Bartlett Hall Brewery this Thursday 8/28 at 6pm! I’ll talk Unflattening, my comics-making process, teaching comics, and share sneak peeks at the new work Nostos! Info https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/sf-thinking-in-comics
I made a mistake in one word somehow in the original - I went through and replaced all the files on my site - so all should be correct. So if you are making use of it, feel free to grab the new, corrected versions. sorry - and thanks!
I didn't directly mention Ai, as it's really about what you relinquish when you let something do the work for you. It robs you of decisions and struggle - and the joy of being surprised (which happened to me all throughout making this). It robs you of learning - and that's the most important thing.
My drawn statement on Ai in the classroom! from the now finished syllabus for my liberal studies class on learning. As promised, it's all available on my site for sharing, printing, etc. Images here are the Ai standalone & minicomic in single sheet form - the version that can be folded/cut into a booklet is on my site (it's half upside down, so this was clearer). Share as you wish - please cite & let me know how it goes! We don't want to be robbed of struggle or surprise! https://spinweaveandcut.com/fall-2025-syllabi/
To all who asked, yes - you can use it in your classes, syllabi - but appreciate if you wait till final version, I should be posting in a week, and it’ll live permanently on my site here al- thanks, glad it resonated with folks! https://spinweaveandcut.com/education-home/

my statement on Ai from the mini-comic I'm making as syllabus for a new class I'm teaching this fall. It's simple, but I pretty much said all I have to say on it - it robs you of decisions and struggle - and the joy of being surprised. It robs you of learning...
Nonscientific poll: would folks be interested in the opening chapter to #Nostos in standalone accordion format, w/bonus behind the scenes, process stuff included before the book is finished (it’d be printed there as well in standard book format)? Hoping to finally make this happen! #Unflattening 2
(Sorry, I couldn’t keep posting here regularly, was losing track - but @dogtrax kindly shared it here, so I thought I should properly)

At last! Finished page: how a star forms, what fuels it, & how it forges new forms into being! A star is a momentary reversal - a wellspring of possibilities that makes life possible. This took me some time to figure out to say the least - but geeked to be done & move onward! #Nostos #Unflattening 2
@nsousanis Wow, the power of comics at work, what an exceptional page!
You do know there are artist's programs at CERN, right?
@dirk thanks! And I’ve heard of such things but not super familiar…

I always thought that comics might be a perfect medium for tackling particle physics and quantum phenomena, as it employs visible and invisible elements (and is able to transcend linear narratives).

@dirk agreed! The opening of the chapter tries to deal with the extra dimensional nature of things that aren’t things in ways comics can handle. I’m not sure I quite pulled it off, but the idea is there. (And sorry, I’m not really using mastodon - I couldn’t keep up with multiple platforms and so left it all on bluesky…)
@nsousanis I was sorry to see you go, but of course it's important that you have an eye on your capacities.
Bluesky is of course the bigger stage currently, but the venture capital/enshittification aspects keep me here.
Austrian comic artist Ulli Lust summed it up nicely in her latest post:

(In case it helps: The app Openvibe lets you post to Bluesky and Mastodon simultaneously.)
