Yt people do better challenge 2023
Changing instances because the admin of the one I'm currently on called out "outrage culture" (whatever the f*ck that is), said he doesn't care, and then proceeded to play the victim. Gurl...

Huh.

Consumer Reports (CR) has released a mobile app (iOS, Android on the way) that shows what data companies collect about you, then allows you to have CR get the data deleted:

https://www.permissionslipcr.com

Essentially, CR will act as the data ombudsman for anyone who asks them to. I love it.

CR is a non-profit that accepts no advertising or corporate sponsorship, and they have a great reputation. It's a superb choice to take on the data capitalists.

US-only (don't @ me).

Twitter whistleblower Zatko lands new job at a security consulting firm

The position will be Zatko's first full-time role since being fired by Twitter a year ago after clashing with then-CEO Parag Agrawal over security concerns.

The Washington Post
I don’t have much to say about the murder of Tyre. However 1. I need the media to quit expressing shock that the officers who murdered him are Black. The institution of policing is racist. It’s structural. CRT can help to unpack and explain. Too bad people can’t learn it or be taught it in schools. 2. Cops think they are at war with the people. This is how they think of us: pre-criminals just on the verge of needing apprehending. Some obviously more than others.
If you are exhausted by relentless binaries and oppressions that rely on battle metaphors you can think about building growing, constructing, nurturing, creating, seeding, fostering justice instead of fighting for it.
@Jaden2 we have to stop referring to them as police. They aren't policing communities; they are terrorizing communities, so the question we need to be asking is: why are some people (and cities) against the movement to #DefundTheTerrorists?

@JosephMenn kinda seems like Musk has incited harrassment against you
@JosephMenn JFC Joseph. I had missed this entire thing. Sorry this happened to you.
@JosephMenn absolutely nobody saw this train wreck coming jfc
@hacks4pancakes @JosephMenn Days go by and we get more evidence of how contemptible Elmo is.
@hacks4pancakes @JosephMenn A man-child is perhaps the most abject representation of a person. A billionaire man-child, this is what we get: Elmo.

@locksmithprime @hacks4pancakes @JosephMenn

At this point a lot of people need to stop letting piles of evidence about people in power's misdeeds pile up to the sky without doing anything.

Like... I know I'm external to the US. But no one should have the power to be this terrible with no consequences.

(And I'm not *just* talking about Elno. Orange man, The Floridian dictator, oil companies, etc. All of them are abusing all of us, borders be damned)

@AtomicMaya @hacks4pancakes @JosephMenn We hope that consequences happen, albeit they seem to take a long time. The orange scum was ejected, and the US midterms basically denied this style by choosing the middle. Elmo's delusions have caused havoc, scared advertisers and users, and hurt Tesla stock. Will that last? To be seen. I got out of Twitter and will not go back while he owns it. To hell with him.

@locksmithprime @hacks4pancakes @JosephMenn

Not entirely agreeing on ejected. With the split he was more like... gently bumped aside. wrt Elno I agree.

Not holding my breath on real consequences though. Too many greasy palms, too much centralized power, not enough guardrails on justice's ability to turn a blind eye or go slow.

Wealth shouldn't equate to power :(

@AtomicMaya @hacks4pancakes @JosephMenn Granted, the orange reject got in because of the electoral college, having lost the popular vote twice. One could say the popular vote never wanted him in the first place...
@JosephMenn Elon is working hard to make his word worth less than toilet paper.
@halfcocked @JosephMenn Toilet paper has a very important application. Elmo? Pfft.
@halfcocked @JosephMenn used, floating on a toilet bowl, toilet paper, to be precise.
@JosephMenn Elon Musk calling other people liars; how ironic LOL

@JosephMenn
You notice it goes straight to the abuse? Not "Menn has erred and should have called for comment".

Not even just "liar"... it was "contemptible liar". Let's all hold him in contempt.

I don't think he gets how big a flashing sign he is hanging around his own neck.

@RoyBrander @JosephMenn “We see the world, not as it is, but as we are.”
@JosephMenn Ego Must has shown us who he really is for some time now. Why does anyone believe he and his platform are worth following and promoting?
@JosephMenn Is there a list somewhere of journalists that were kicked off Twitter that have moved to Mastodon? That sounds like a list of accounts I would like to follow.

@JosephMenn So... let me get this straight, Elon Musk said you lied, and... it was really him that lied.

Well, that's simple, believable, and fits what we know about him.
