And that’s the second reason I’m glad I left VR. Though it would be incredibly naive to think my current job is safe from layoffs :cries-in-still-have-mortgage-to-pay:

Right out of school, I got a job as a VR developer. Just under two years in, I had to leave. They could claim they were using VR to study and practice complex cases, but in reality, most of my work ended up as a novelty, shown post-surgery at talks or conferences.
A few years later, I’m really glad I left. Some things are all hype and no substance and they never change, at least not for the better.
As we approach Nowruz, the islamic republic of Iran has carried out public executions of young people, including a 19‑year‑old wrestler arrested during January protests..
I hope the new year brings an end to this cycle of violence and a truly new day of justice and dignity for the people of Iran and the wider region.

A tad bit offended by the Tzu facing left. They’re not dumb. They just pretend to be so they don’t have to listen to us all the time. They just don’t feel the need to prove themselves to us. Personally I think it’s genius.

A message for this year's approaching antiauthoritarian New Year, Newroz, from the "Free Life Party of [Eastern, Iran-held part of] Kurdistan" (PJAK) in a rough translation.

Keep in mind that usually in this context the word "nation" and derivatives are used in their original meaning of a people with shared history, culture, etc, which can and do very much overlap without any fundamental issues and is not related to be being declared a citizen (or not) of any exclusionary exclusivist State which is instead a declaration of State-ownership while original meaning nationalities are beyond any States' control.

Also keep in mind that the entire foundation of Newroz (and Nowruz) is literally celebration of the people overthrowing a tyranny, which is obviously why tyrannies are terrified every year.

No tracking, no metrics or “engagement” stats. How liberating.
How weird is this need to write, share, be heard, or be seen.. A friend sent me a backup of one of the many blogs I had over the years. Reading my own words from ~20 years ago was deeply cringey. You’d think that is enough to stop me from doing this again.
Yet here I am. Smh, humans are weird.
"I know people, I know towns, farms, hills and rivers and rocks, I know how the sun at sunset in autumn falls on the side of a certain plowland in the hills; but what is the sense of giving a boundary to all that, of giving it a name and ceasing to love where the name ceases to apply? What is love of one's country; is it hate of one's uncountry? Then it's not a good thing."

Me: it’s almost gardening season and everything is going to be better soon 🌱
Also me:

I have a tragic love-hate relationship with sleep.

I chase it all day
and fear it all night.
Because sleep means dreams.
And dreams don’t ask
who you’re ready to see.
