Did you know the flu killed more people than COVID did this season?

45,000 people died and 710,000 people were hospitalised in America last year due to the flu. That is just America. The final numbers aren’t in worldwide yet but it’s probably around 450,000 deaths given the severity of the flu season.

About 16,000 died of COVID worldwide total.

Which is not great either, but one of those numbers is bigger than the other.

The flu often leads to long-term disability in victims who become hospitalised, with symptoms often very similar to long COVID (because it causes similar damage)

And people wonder why I get so mad about the people who act like COVID is the only one that matters at all, when this is demonstrably not true.

It just makes it all feel performative as Hell, and that it’s not actually about disabled people, it’s about the theatre of it.

And I’m not saying masking is bad but I am saying if COVID is your main reason to mask, well, maybe you should also care about other respiratory diseases.

Because as it stands if you only scream about COVID it just feels performative and like you don’t give a fuck about anyone but yourself because you don’t see the flu as a big deal. People with existing respiratory disease know damn well how big of a deal it is.
