@jensimmons What is the current status of #PWA on #iOS, especially in the #EU? Are there any updates at #WWDC26?
@nickchomey @Gina @owa @pluralistic From this perspective, it would be *enormously* helpful if FOSS folks stopped pretending they don't need browsers and the web. Open OSes facilitate open, interoperable over-the-top layers *and vise versa*

I think all app functionality can also be achieved via Progressive Web Apps ( #PWA ). A PWA should be able to run on an open browser engine (beware of Chrome #lockin), and hence on open standards, independent of a specific platform like Android or iOS.

With GNOME Web, you can install a website as a Web App.

@Gina My angle is certain necessities of life requiring an app (banking, medical, parking, etc) all of that should be possible without an app. That’s not saying no-apps, just apps-not-mandatory.
@Gina I would appreciate the not-everything-needs-an-app angle and focussing more on the web as a true open platform. Good luck with it all 🫶🙌🤞

If this case succeeds it could force Apple to allow browser competition in the US, forever changing the dynamic for web apps on mobile.

@slightlyoff im sure you're well aware of the trends and landscape, but I found this article to be very eye-opening about the present and future of low-end devices (as well as RAM in general). I hadn't even heard of brands like Transsion, which seem to be enormous globally.

Seems like ssr html will be even more important going forward, as people stick with devices longer and new devices get less ram.

@slightlyoff I was just re-reading your fantastic https://infrequently.org/2024/11/if-not-react-then-what/ article and clicked through some of the links.

This article's (https://okayfail.com/garden/youre-not-facebook-why-use-their-tools.html
) ridicule of copying Facebook whilst saying that their employer, Github, is too mission critical to use React or have complexity-induced downtime could only be reconciled by laughter.

One might even say that Github's heavy adoption of React (and vibes) has led directly to how awful it is on a regular basis

If Not React, Then What?

Frameworkism is now the dominant creed of today's frontend discourse, and it's bullshit. We owe it to ourselves and to our users to reject dogma and embrace engineering as a discipline that strives to serve users first and foremost.

The State of HTML survey will close soon 🚨

It has an entire section on Web Apps & results are used for browser roadmaps!

Tell them what you're missing, tell them what needs to be fixed e.g. Install Prompts, Wake Lock, Notifications or interop issues
