by setting the entire thing (https://codeberg.org/whitequark/mail.whitequark.org) up from scratch on a never-seen-before IP using a completely fresh server in about a day on new-to-me NixOS, i want to put the folk wisdom of "you can't self-host email in 2025 and even if you did gmail won't accept it" to rest. evidently, it can be done.

Microsoft 365 however apparently will hate your email no matter what. you learn to live with it

If you have ever taught organizational change to research programmers and data scientists, and would be willing to look over some freshly-baked training materials for me to tell me what I've missed or misrepresented, please give me a shout - I'm [email protected].
i should port something else to webassembly. maybe that'll bring me happiness
Since the year is almost over, I thought it would be neat to look back and share my top four comics of 2024! Hope you liked them too! ✨

Is there any published, empirical research into how effective (or not) it is for a complex application to have a “simple mode” setting that reduces its functionality to make it more approachable for beginners?

(Conceptually I'm talking about Garage Band and Logic being one application where you can switch between the simple & pro interfaces & feature set.)

Teaching Literature Reviewing for Software Engineering Research

The goal of this chapter is to support teachers in holistically introducing graduate students to literature reviews, with a particular focus on secondary research. It provides an overview of the overall literature review process and the different types of literature review before diving into guidelines for selecting and conducting different types of literature review. The chapter also provides recommendations for evaluating the quality of existing literature reviews and concludes with a summary of our learning goals and how the chapter supports teachers in addressing them.

I am doing a research project and am looking to speak with US high school teachers about teaching skills outside their core curriculum, like collaboration, communication, taking feedback. We are offering $50 for an hour long virtual interview. Any subject, any high school grade, preferably public/charter schools. If this is you or someone you know, hit me up!
