For the folks who get CoMaps from the Google Play store: The review process took "a bit" longer this time around - but version 2026.05.06 is finally out.

Give the "Check for update" button in the map downloader a go to get the map files with OSM data from May 10!

The next #MOTIS version will have leg alternatives! 😎

So in case the transfer is a bit tight or if you prefer another mode of transport, you can click on the alternative and the MOTIS UI will update the journey. This includes potentially a different walk/bike/car/etc. ride from/to another stop at the start/destination. So it's also a way to explore more options to start/finish your journey.

Alternatives respect query settings like bike carriage, allowed modes, wheelchair compatibility, etc.

A huge thanks to the ~25 folks that joined us for our virtual birthday party yesterday and made it a really great event! πŸ₯³ Covering a range of 14 time zones, it really showed how global our community is. 🌏 Over the course of around 2.5 hours, we were joined by some long-standing CoMaps contributors, active members of the #OpenStreetMap community, and many new faces!
And if you want to join our birthday celebration community call, it'll happen today at 19:00 UTC, more details here: https://codeberg.org/comaps/comaps/wiki/First-anniversary-celebrations

Today we are celebrating our first birthday! 🍰🎈

As it's been a very busy year – full of new community members, new features, and more – we've written up a summary of all the things that have happened.

And to give all of you a small gift: If you press the *Check Updates* button in the 2026.05.06 version of CoMaps, you'll find some freshly updated maps that were quietly released for you yesterday!

Celebrating CoMaps' first birthday

CoMaps turns one, and we give an update on the achievements and state of the project

To help protect Signal users from phishing and social engineering attacks, we’ve introduced additional confirmations and educational messaging in the app to help people better detect fraudulent profiles, especially message requests from scammers posing as Signal.

More changes are on the way.

Release 2026.05.06 is out on Codeberg, F-Droid, iOS, and soon on Google Play and brings a big new feature:

From this version onward, updating the map files of CoMaps is no longer tied to updating the app. Which means we can bring you fresh #openstreetMap based maps more often!

Read more about it on our website: https://www.comaps.app/news/2026-05-06/Release-2026.05.06-release-notes/

Making an app like CoMaps does not just mean developing new features. It also requires ongoing work to make sure we don't accumulate technical debt and stay future proof. On our blog, contributor Jean-Baptiste outlines what work we've already done!

Read it here: https://www.comaps.app/news/comaps-technical-changes/

On May 12, CoMaps is turning one year old and, to celebrate with our community, we'll hold a little virtual birthday party to which everyone is invited that day at 19:00 UTC!

We'll share a bit of how CoMaps as a community, project and app has been doing, but mostly want to give some space to get to know each other!

We are currently looking for more volunteer iOS developers. Could that be YOU? πŸ™‚

To make sure the iOS version of CoMaps does not fall too much behind the Android version, we need more iOS contributors.

Which is why we'd love to onboard more iOS devs! If you're interested in contributing on that front, get in touch on Zulip, we're always eager to help people get started in contributing! Find us here: https://codeberg.org/comaps/comaps/src/branch/main/docs/CONTRIBUTING.md#team-messaging
