It's hard to see this where I'm standing right now, but, if I'm really honest with myself, this was a really good year. Cheers to the remainder and a hopeful 2023! 🥳🥂

Universities often announce increases in faculty diversity; how is that adding up? 🧵

In a new analysis of US federal data in Nature Human Behavioir with @NeilLewisJr & @[email protected], we show that the U.S. is not succeeding in diversifying faculty.

We also (1) analyze whether the pipeline analogy is helping or hurting and (2) compute what it would take to achieve faculty parity in our lifetime.

US universities are not succeeding in diversifying faculty - Nature Human Behaviour

US universities have made public commitments to recruit and retain faculty of colour. Analysis of three federal datasets shows that at current rates diversity in US faculty will never reach racial parity. Yet, colleges and universities could achieve parity by 2050 by diversifying their faculty at 3.5 times the current pace.

How to protect research ideas as a junior scientist

Ijeoma Opara learnt some hard lessons after getting scooped in a grant application.

And maybe this is balm for those of you experiencing this idea theft but of the papers I am not credited on that came from my ideas, let's just say I would have done them differently and had I been involved, the paper would've been much better.

Our lab talks a bunch about how good ideas are everywhere but that not everybody is really willing to WORK the ideas with our science in methods, contexts, and perspectives that truly advance our understanding. We have good ideas, sure, but we also WORK them. #psychology #SocialScience·s #academic

Good advice in here for something many (including myself) experience. In particular, cultivating an inner circle of trusted people is top tier wisdom.

if it does happen just remember that someone who steals ideas is also likely to cut corners elsewhere. Being 1st isn't all! #psychology #academia
