Israeli special force mission in Lebanon fails to find navigator missing for 40 years

Israel carried out a commando raid in eastern Lebanon to search for clues about a navigator who went missing 40 years ago. The operation left dozens of people dead and dozens more wounded. It found no remains or new information related to the 40-year-old case of Ron Arad. The Israeli military said Saturday that the force came back without evidence linked to Arad. The Lebanese army said the team landed by helicopter near the Syria border and moved toward Nabi Chit. Lebanon's state news agency said the force clashed with Hezbollah, local fighters and Lebanese soldiers.

@CStamp @mekkaokereke Yeah, statistically not huge, and psychology-study games don't always translate well to the real world. But there are lots of other related studies if you really want to dig into it. This is just the one I remember hearing about :-).

For me, the big thing isn't so much the hormone effect, but the effect of people's _ideas_ of the hormones, which in this case were opposite to the actual ones.

Testosterone leads to fairness, not aggression: researchers | CBC News

Testosterone doesn't cause people to become aggressive or risky as many people believe but actually encourages fairness, European researchers say.

@mekkaokereke The ones who got t. and not told what it was played somewhat more fairly than the control group, which is interesting. But much more interesting was that the ones who were _told_ they were given testosterone played much more selfishly, whether it was placebo or not. The conclusion was that people's _idea_ of what hormones do completely overrides their actual effects on behavior.

@mekkaokereke Reminds me of a study I read about many years ago where participants had to play a typical psychology-study game where had to make a choice to be more fair or more selfish. Control group got placebo. The three experimental groups got:

* placebo, but told it was testosterone
* testosterone, but not told what it was
* testosterone, and told it was testosterone

@carnage4life honestly, treating people as interchangeable with tools is the central fallacy of a lot of AI BS. It's an easy mistake for rich people to make since so much of their experience of other people is purely as a means to an end.
@carnage4life those analogies are for different divisions of labor. You don't make clothes but other people do for you. Making software by paying others to do it is the status quo. Having a tool that can generate software is like getting a new sewing machine. If you wanna operate it, go ahead, but that's a very different prospect from paying someone else to.

Update: apparently people who go to school in the U.S. are exempted. That's nice for them, and means we can still retain some people, but my comment above still stands.
