posting this so i can pin it:

what up we're trying to make a federated bittorrent tracker, in the short term as an emergency information preservation vessel to avoid a fascist memoryhole, in the long term as a merger between the lessons of the federated and pirate web:

more details when i write them

Preserving Public Information

With all the noise, preserve that sense of wonder. New microscope ready for adventures!

I wrote a CDC Archive Archiver to pull public information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. Just in case people get weird ideas of removing science from the public discourse. This is part of a larger effort that, among others, @lavaeolus initiated. You are welcome to chime in if that's up your alley.

having succeeded in purchasing positions of influence inside the White House, the billionaires and tech VCs have now set their sights back on Wikipedia

All external communications with #NIH have been shut down by executive order.

One of my colleagues was in the middle of an F99/K00 (specialized transition grant from grad school to postdoc for marginalized students) and the study section was shut down in the middle of the meeting.

Unclear what this means. Just passing on information.

The Trump admin has cancelled the panels that approve NIH grants, and is also banning scientists from communicating with the public, attending conferences, and hiring.

The NIH is the largest public funder of biomedical research in the world. This will severely halt the development of many lifesaving treatments. Absolutely devastating.

I don't know how much clearer it needs to be for any pro-"AI" academics than the collusion of government and tech giants announcing $500b in funding for "AI to cure cancer" while simultaneously preparing to gut the NIH: you are digging your own grave.
Not an official announcement yet (those will always come from an account like @admin, @techwg, or @socialwg) but neuromatch.social will be moving its hosting out of the US and will be exploring how best to protect our members in the coming weeks. All members are welcome to discuss concerns, suggestions, or pitch in however they'd like here or in the discord (invite in announcements, and moving off discord is on the table too)
In light of events this week, I think I'mma set up a tool for regularly backing up all the data from ClinicalTrials.gov and the Drugs@FDA data files and sharing them as a torrent or something

Id like to put my lab servers to work archiving US federal data thats likely to get pulled - climate and biomed data seems mostly likely. The most obvious strategy to me seems like setting up mirror torrents on academictorrents. Anyone compiling a list of at-risk data yet?

edit (2025-09-21): this became https://sciop.net and its still going, in case anyone in this thread missed it

edit (2025-09-21 pt 2): do note the date on original post, nearly a year old, we have been rolling on sciop since February or so
