Everyone talks about not having senior devs in the future because we’re replacing the juniors with LLMs, but nobody’s talking about losing senior devs now because people who are competent and care about the quality of their work are leaving this LLM-infested hellscape of a career path to go into carpentry, hostelry, or subsistence farming

Some book festival finds:
IF SciFi Magazines with stories by Vonnegut, Heinlein (part of original serial of Moon…), Herbert, and new to me Robert Shaw (NI SciFi author).

Also some weird Fantasy by RA MacAvoy, and another by Robert Shaw (who went by BoSh in the SciFi community apparently).

Excited to find a new Sci-fi & Fantasy bookstore here at Hay-on-Wye tonight

The corp desperation for this to work still is in part because to pay for the trump v1’s tax cuts, tech companies can’t write off R&D expenses like software engineer salaries.

They can write off hosting infrastructure and paying for tokens.

Or that’s what i recall being one of the fallouts of that terrible tax bill

I had an upsetting conversation with a good friend who is now, I feel like, surrendering to LLM. He has to use it at work, and he is surrounded/managed by people who don’t care about “quality.” He is tired of fighting it. He thinks inevitably this mindset will dominate, and it is futile to fight.

We disagreed to disagree.

I found it insulting. I feel like my agency was erased. I care and I continue to care. How will that not matter? It will continue to matter to me. I felt bullied.

Seeing people I respect calling their development process "arguing with chatbots" now is really getting kind of sad. There's no agency there, man, there's no choice. There's no understanding. You're standing at the craps table in a plausible-syntax casino, telling the dice they're wrong and to try again. Of course the house is winning.

Just my morning thoughts as I realize why I’ve seen more “Claude is amazing” like feedback and discussions from associates who are managers, vs independent contributors who may at best see it as a way to generate TPS reports they were making up anyway.

We’ve automated Office Space

Of course when you have an entire tier of the workforce whose job is writting memos and delegating tasks, of course they’re going to see the sycophant behavior of an LLM as the perfect worker who manages up.

They even appear to take coaching well.
