In 6th grade, my teacher Ms. Z read this #book to our class. Fast forward 20 years (!!) and this book shows up in a little free #library on my walk. Time for me to go read in the sunshine!

#educators must always center their #teaching in the understanding that #trauma is in the room. For all we ask them to carry, we must remember what they are carrying on top of that - the invisible backpack - that impacts their day-to-day functioning. By maintaining our awareness and our #empathy, we can help #students unpack this extra weight and find understanding and belonging in the #classroom.
Today we finished listening to an audio recording of "Two Old Women" by Velma Wallis. This tale comes from Athabascan culture - specifically the Gwich'in tribe - and follows the story of Sa and Chidzigyaak, two elderly women abandoned by their tribe during a harsh winter. The story follows their struggles and the success of their survival.

Ensuring that our students know they are safe and they belong is crucial to regulating the lower brain. When a child passes through the lower levels of Maslow's Hierarchy (safety and security; love and belonging) they move into a state where they can engage the cortex and participate in the learning process.🧠
