Slow to approve follow requests:
Art posts are followers only, and we review all follows to prevent “generative AI” fans from accessing our content and feeding it to the slop machines. You can speed this process up by sending us links to your anti LLM posts (the older the better).

if we’ve interacted a bit and you mask in public and take other viral precautions, DM us and ask if we'd like to compare locations. Would love more local connections, or to say hi while you're passing through :3 :3 :)

Just wanted to show a closeup of the layers of sediment forming at the bottom of one of my solutions. I had already processed this clay once by sieving so these are the finer sediments that are still too coarse to be included in my decorating slip. This is the process that gives terra sigillata its soft, silky finish.

When we find #clay in nature, it’s not just clay. It’s lots of different materials combined. Clay is characterized by its fine particle size: less than 2 microns.

We think we might need a place to crash. Like, preferably out of Oklahoma. We don't have money, really, but we're quick to get work. We don't really know what to do anymore, we are really hoping for someone's goodwill. We don't expect it but we're hoping nonetheless.

I saw talk of menstrual cups earlier (re: petroleum & downstream plastic issues) and wanted to share the Jalie Sarah period underwear and reusable pads pattern, available as both paper and PDF in a wide range of sizes. I've made both. They're quick to assemble and use scraps! (In fact, I ought to make more with some scraps I found. ) #sewing

Would anyone be interested in forming a programming / general niche nerdy tech stuff community where LLM discussion is completely banned?

I've been finding programmer spaces more and more and more unbearable as slop death machines become all-encompassing and unavoidable. It's pretty tiring and isolating and I realize I haven't opened lobste.rs or hacker news or reddit in months because LLMs are all they talk about and I hate it.

I'd be interested in setting up a discord / matrix / xmpp / fluxer / whatever where things can be better. If you're into the idea, please reply and retoot! Thank you.

Decided it's in a "probably good enough" state to release the code :)

have noticed a good amount of other visual artists joining fedi recently, which is always really wonderful to see!!

Something I would like to say for new folks joining, is that it is pretty widely expected on fedi to have image descriptions on your art!

fedi has a large blind userbase, and there is a lot of community care here to make sure that fedi remains a place accessible to all of its users. I know coming from other social media where there isn't as strong of an expectation that you put image descriptions on your visual art, it can feel jarring to suddenly have to start doing that. but to be a bit blunt about it, it kind of sucks to have a space that is known for its accessibility, that has been able to have community grow and flourish over years because of it, start have that accessibility get gradually diluted as new folks who aren't aware of those norms join. it alienates users who need it, who were already here and who have formed the spaces you are now joining!

Also, as someone who often likes to make more abstract or up to interpretation art, I know it can feel akward and add new friction you never dealt with before to figure out exactly how to describe things while maintaining that. and to be honest it just is going to be akward at first! I've found that we started to get better with it after our first few times though, and at this point it's just something we naturally do! and while the friction was new, once it was something we already expected when it came to uploading things, it no longer felt like a chore, it just became a natural part of the uploading process

in general on fedi, you are going to encounter more friction-inducing things like this. the thing that makes fedi different from every other social media platform is that it is not owned by any one corporation, and it is not profit driven. it is community run and owned, and it exists to create community, not money! profit driven platforms have a massive incentive to make every action as frictionless as possible, to keep you on for longer so they can harvest more advertising data to sell. fedi, on the other hand, is incentivized towards building lasting communities, and often that is going to mean more friction and cultural expectations than you're used to. it is an adjustment, but I think it is very worth it <3

"I was born in the second millennium CE": boring, small number energy, clearly just trying not to say AD.

"I was born in the thirteenth baktun of creation": epic big number to make you sound wise and ancient, adds two extra bases to our time keeping system, centers Mesoamerican history for a change.

solving the date formats problem by switching to the Long Count. it sorts numerically and looks cool.

Is it just me or is this a very tiny tiger beetle? 👀

It’s only about the size of an ant but it looks very tiger beetle shaped to me?
