The Gaming Hell YEAR-IN-REVUE 2022 EX Plus Alpha

Over on Twitter I do a traditional Gaming Hell YEAR-IN-REVUE [https://twitter.com/SarahSSowertty/status/1608067710092558336] where I go over a reasonable amount of what my little site's been up to over the past 12 months. I can't show every game though 'cause that'd make the thread even longer than it normally is. Oh, what's that? I can make cohost posts as long as I want? Well then. Let's look at al 12 articles from Gaming Hell this year, and the other nonsense I've been up to! JANUARY - WWF WRESTLEMANIA: THE ARCADE GAME [http://gaminghell.co.uk/WWFWrestlemaniaTheArcadeGame.html] The salt sign is a reference to a glitch in-game. The Melty sign is a reference to the question I'm always asking in my heart. [https://staging.cohostcdn.org/attachment/d7d08edb-7a7d-4a47-b90b-9c5a57189526/wwfmaniatitle2.png] The year began with me not writing anything at all, actually! Instead, I very kindly received an offer from D.J. Tatsujin of GemuBaka [https://gemubaka.com/] to write something in my stead, and I suggested WWF Wrestlemania as while it's a game that's interested me, wrestling isn't my area at all. Fortunately, D.J. Tatsujin absolutely knocked it out of the park, delivering an incredibly in-depth look at one of Midway's most entertaining games, including glitches, cut content and more. FEBRUARY - CLOCKWORK AQUARIO [http://gaminghell.co.uk/ClockworkAquario.html] Generally, it's unwise to use Sniper Honey as a projectile but Sarah can get away with it. [https://staging.cohostcdn.org/attachment/50669cae-294f-4ff9-b3f4-5613f7bb40d6/cwaquariotitle2.png] I'd actually been following the story of the game fairly closely for a few years, mostly via the Lost Levels thread on the game [http://forums.lostlevels.org/viewtopic.php?t=2577] so I was as ready as anyone could be. I even managed to get a 1CC with Elle-Moon [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGuz4dElRiM&feature=emb_title] before the article went up! A very enjoyable bit of lost arcade history, although whoever disabled the Share Play option on the PS4 release needs a good telling-off. MARCH - FIELD DAY [http://gaminghell.co.uk/FieldDay.html] Ptolemy's using magic to be this strong. Don't try this at home. [https://staging.cohostcdn.org/attachment/88661a4d-af53-4d2a-81de-4020b9837430/fielddaytitle2.png] Not every article can be about lost arcade games or digitised actors duking it out in the squared circle. Sometimes, they're about humble and unassuming games forgotten by history. Such is the case with Field Day, Taito's attempt at aping the success of Track & Field with pretty good results. Any excuse to talk about multi-event sports games, I guess. APRIL - ARKS' PLAYHOUSE [http://gaminghell.co.uk/ArksPlayhouse.html] No-one has ever seen the ending to this game. [https://staging.cohostcdn.org/attachment/8a2ffa33-51e7-4b85-8e70-c19064f5c8b5/FlEDqzCWQAUwm8y.jfif] For some reason I insisted on making another one of these Tyrannobuilder-made micro visual novels, this being the final one starring my goofy characters. The theme of this one- can all nerds be friends- is something I think about a lot, so I put a lot of heart into it. Incompetence and time meant that several intended features- multiple character perspectives with alternate routes available, a secret 'kindness' variable, a musical number ending- were cut, but maybe for another micro visual novel... Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru [http://gaminghell.co.uk/KaeruNoTameNiKaneWaNaru.html] People to this day still say this game's engine was used for Link's Awakening, which is not true. [https://staging.cohostcdn.org/attachment/5b301036-1097-4e3a-99f6-9c7a961c7fdc/kaerutitle2.png] As for Kaeru, this is a very cute RPG-ish game that has unfortunately become a footnote in Zelda history for reasons that, as it turns out, are completely untrue. It's a shame because it doesn't need to be in Link's shadow- it's an interesting and inventive little game all on its own merits! Hopefully more people see this page and realise the reused engine story is not true. MAY - PANEL DE PON [http://gaminghell.co.uk/PanelDePon.html] I do not want to talk about how much work I put in to play the version of the game on Animal Crossing: New Leaf. [https://staging.cohostcdn.org/attachment/fa21ec27-b95f-42f1-9f16-0fafc41f7063/paneldepontitle2.png] I think this is the article I'm proudest of this year, though I seem to remember really struggling to come up with a suitable game to cover for the site's anniversary. After a friend played the SNES Switch Online version with me, I realised- oh yeah, Panel de Pon rules, I should write about that. Every regional variant and version covered, oh my! JUNE - POCKET FIGHTER [http://gaminghell.co.uk/PocketFighter.html] Sarah probably wouldn't wear Morrigan's outfit, so she went for Hsien-Ko... But requested the little window in the top be made a little smaller. [https://staging.cohostcdn.org/attachment/ca2787ed-9ee9-43ee-a521-36227e7c93d1/pocketfightertitle2.png] I like to cover at least one fighting game a year, and with this one having a rerelease this year as part of Capcom Fighting Collection, why not look at pint-sized pugilism? This is one of those fighting games you pick when you're not sure what else to play because it's easy to pick back up after a long time. JULY - VENDETTA [http://gaminghell.co.uk/Vendetta.html] Sniper Honey is cool, but rude. [https://staging.cohostcdn.org/attachment/103a5924-a78e-461a-b210-7a79b0b109c3/vendettatitle2.png] About a month before I ended up knee-deep in Konami's Turtles games, I covered one of their better scrolling brawlers. A much, much better game than Crime Fighters [http://gaminghell.co.uk/CrimeFighters.html], that's for sure, and it's such a shame it's only received a home port in the last few years. AUGUST - [RESIDENT EVIL: THE MERCENARIES 3D] (http://gaminghell.co.uk/ResidentEvilTheMercenaries3D.html [http://gaminghell.co.uk/ResidentEvilTheMercenaries3D.html]) You'd better believe I didn't need much of an excuse to draw Sniper Honey as Barry Burton. [https://staging.cohostcdn.org/attachment/1b543dbf-54ab-40cb-ba8a-e43737d20962/remc3dtitle2.png] The Nintendo 3DS makes its Gaming Hell debut outside of, uh, the port of Corpse Party with an exclusive title that brings together a whole bunch of stuff from Resident Evil 4 & 5's bonus Mercenaries modes. It works a lot better than you'd think, and the fact it's running on a handheld from this era at all is impressive! SEPTEMBER - PRIME [http://gaminghell.co.uk/Prime.html] ![Sniper Honey is a fan of the classics, which means Krazy Kat)(https://staging.cohostcdn.org/attachment/5b18e2e6-5d6d-4945-9e3d-6945f0ba3f90/primetitle2.png [https://staging.cohostcdn.org/attachment/5b18e2e6-5d6d-4945-9e3d-6945f0ba3f90/primetitle2.png]) The Mega-CD makes a not-so-triumphant debut on the site outside of ports like for Time Gal and... I'll admit it, the main reason I wanted to talk about this one is all the stuff around the game- the bizarre comics, the circumstances of its release, the Tim Follin soundtrack... Just anything but the game itself. For maximum enjoyment, please have this song [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlkZzVwRnIs]queued up and ready to go. He's gonna get himself some justice!! OCTOBER - WONDER MOMO [http://gaminghell.co.uk/WonderMomo.html] Momo is Sarah's oshii, you'd better believe it. [https://staging.cohostcdn.org/attachment/f7dc5ceb-6f6c-4701-a92d-69359539d0bc/wndrmomotitle2.png] This one's been on the to-do list for a long time, as Namco's stage-play-themed action game is a real strange one! If I'm allowed to toot my own horn for a second, my research into this game lead to me filing a MAMETesters report [https://mametesters.org/view.php?id=8404] that lead to the game's emulation being imrproved. Sometimes, Gaming Hell does a useful thing, every now and then. NOVEMBER - YOMAWARI: LOST IN THE DARK [http://gaminghell.co.uk/YomawariLostInTheDarkWarning.html] Sarah has decided she's going to have a strong word with her travel agent when she gets home. [https://staging.cohostcdn.org/attachment/9789c272-9dbb-4b07-8804-f7a046328184/yomawariiiititle2.png] The traditional just-barely-missed-Hallowe'en article, playing through this one comically wrecked my Steam playing stats for the year. It's very much a Yomawari straight down the middle in the end, but I'm quite happy to play another one of these every now and then. By the way, the MS Paint art above is based on the poster for The Exorcist III [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099528/mediaviewer/rm2695634433/?ref_=tt_ov_i]! DECEMBER - SEGA GAME LIBRARY [http://gaminghell.co.uk/SegaGameLibrary.html] The official name of the city in the back there is the Turbozone. Well, not really, but I imagine it is. [https://staging.cohostcdn.org/attachment/a9401f54-1b18-472f-8a94-8587df41c924/segagamelib.png] To round the year out, something a little different, a brief look at several downloadable games Sega made for the Sega Game Library service, exclusively in Japan. Thrill to the exploits of Flicky and Fatal Labyrinth! The timing on this one was pretty lucky as Tadahiko Inoue came forward [https://vgmdb.net/forums/showthread.php?p=109705#post109705] with some info on their development, including the involvement of Mark Cerny! OTHER STUFF Oh yeah... I started streaming this year over on Twitch [https://www.twitch.tv/tepidsnake]. For this one, I do have to thank the people who've contributed to Gaming Hell's tip jar over the years- that helped buy an Elgato which made it possible to do this at all. That's what makes my completely ramshackle and poorly-optimised streams happen! As someone who traditionally didn't put my voice on the internet, it was a bit nerve-wracking to start... But I'm slowly becoming more comfortable with it, and I've got myself a little audience too, so if you've ever shown up to those, thank you. They won't replace Gaming Hell- they're more a part of it than taking it over- but please look forward to more. And hey, it lead to me getting on Retronauts too [https://retronauts.com/article/1922/retronauts-episode-476-darkstalkers] so that's good too! Please hire me to talk about The NewZealand Story for several hours. The Streamer Whose Name Was Stolen says hello. They thank you for your attention. [https://staging.cohostcdn.org/attachment/9144e337-54b4-4a23-8249-1c029f3a693d/soghswnws.png] I have a PNGTuber too, officially called The Streamer Whose Name Was Stolen. People like them, and that makes me happy! END AND ALL OVER 2022 is almost over, so as we move into 2023, remember to be kind to yourself and others in 2023 and beyond. Gaming Hell will continue fighting and being the video game website with guts! Huge guts!! Take care, everyone~!

Aaaa I forgot to mention the 'Fictional Games' event on Glorious Trainwrecks:

'This is a game jam about games that do not exist or currently do not exist. [...] This game jam is heavily inspired by The works of Jorge Luis Borges and Stanisล‚aw Lem, so feel free to peruse their fictions. Suzanne Treister has also made some beautiful fictional video game stills.'

Make a game without actually making the game.
