Researchers at Harvard Business School and University of Toronto used unique data to quantify the value of open source.

Takeways:

* Supply-side (cost to recreate) is ~$4.15B, but demand-side (value to firms) is $8.8T. Shows massive cost savings & productivity boost from OSS.

* If OSS didn't exist, firms would need to spend an estimated 3.5 times more on software than they currently do. OSS provides a massive, often invisible, productivity boost.

* A tiny fraction of OSS developers create the vast majority of value. Only 5% of developers are responsible for over 96% of the demand-side value

* Firms should not just "free ride" on OSS but actively contribute to the ecosystem, as this is far cheaper than recreating the software themselves.

Exploring #projectzomboid. It is quite difficult.
@nimi @EUCommission then, why is the peace discussed between USA and Russia? Btw, I'm not pro nothing.
@itikaneida @precariousmind please, read again my toot if you need it.

@EUCommission Europe must step up, but what you are proposing here is leading us to war (as some of the countries would like). Will the politicians will be in the front lines? Will they die defending something superfluos and impossible at the moment?

Just listen to the people and try to defend the values you boast about.

Also, we europeans should vote for our polticians isn't it?

I liked the idea of Europe, but lately it resembles a group of fascists.

In the last few days the news focused a lot on the fact that #2024 was the first year where we went above #1.5°C. This made me want to highlight a paper again where I was the main author in 2022. In this paper we looked at what temperatures the #IPCC reports focus at and we showed that over the last few assessment reports the focus went to lower and lower temperatures, with the last assessment report focusing most on 1.5°C of warming. This means we produce the most research for a temperature range that we already passed for the first time this year. As the warming won't suddenly stop tomorrow, this means we are aiming our research in the wrong direction. I hope for future assessment reports we will again focus more on the temperature range we actually are speeding towards.

You can find the whole paper here: https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2022EF002876 (it's quite short, so you can read it quickly)
