If you want an old-school Unix experience with security and a modern browser, try FreeBSD or other *BSD operating systems. Most of them work fine under a VM or on older ThinkPads. There's no systemd or GNU stuff in them by default, but you can install most of that if your work depends on it (say like GNU version of AWK or stuff like that). This is not a hate post; it's more like an invitation to try out something else, and who knows, you may like it better. Good luck!
