Wow, the author of the arrow mod has a whole suite of mods to make navigation easier, including something I always wished Doom had, an on-screen compass https://github.com/mmaulwurff/hellscape-navigator
They don't work with Freedoom, I guess because the fonts/assets are different 
but I'll definitely be using the compass the next time I play a standard iwad
I remembered that GZdoom has options to make the map more useful. I customized my experience and I'm having a splendid time
* Normal height changes/doors are dark green
* Locked doors show up as the color they are
* Teleporters are light green
* Level exit is orange
* Secret areas are pink
