I remember a time when the latest Android update meant some cool new features that Apple didn't have. Or something just cool.

Looking at the latest Android 17 update and it's all just fucking AI bullshit.

Think it's time to get serious about a degoogled phone.

Mood:

I got the boot this month and am looking for a new software developer job. Rust and Python would be fun, but I can do a lot of stuff in JS/TS, Kotlin, Java, even C/C++ with a bit of a brush up... Bit of a jack of all trades full stack dev.

Working with open source would be awesome if it paid just enough to survive the mortgage and get something to eat. Climate positive job or EU digital independence development is interesting too.

Hybrid work within reasonable distance from Klaukkala is a-OK. Remote probably whole of EU <3. Can't travel.

Having put this https://jago.kapsi.fi/cv.pdf up on the public interwebs, I'm probably unfit to work in any US company...

Not a techbro. Sane person and a long-time ally.

#Fedihelp Is anyone here in contact with #LadyGaga? My 14yo grandson who I love dearly is lying in hospital on life support. His mum, my daughter, is reading aloud for him the David Attenborough book he was planning to get. His favourite artist is Lady Gaga and my daughter is trying to contact her, to ask if she might send our boy a message to be read to him. It would mean a lot. I know this is a long shot, but can anyone put me in touch?

I just had "the talk" with my 9yo. He came to me asking "Dad, why does AI use so much water just for generating one answer?"

So I explained to him how LLM works, how GenAI came out of that and why AI is a marketing term and absolutely wrong in that context.

Then I loaded GPT4All on my laptop and asked the thing what the result of 9+7 is. It took my poor laptop cpu 12 seconds to come up with an answer and another 12 seconds to generate the sentence with the answer. I showed him how fast kcalc (using the CPUs ALU functions) comes up with the answer for that specific question.

And then I asked a followup question, which almost take 2 minutes to compute. I showed him how the previous question and its answer became part of the prompt which made the calculation longer more complicated just to emulate a dialoge.

He noticed that my laptops CPU fan stepped up and started to roar to get rid of the core heat. Then I explained to him how AI datacenters solve all this ineffitiency by running millions of servers in parallel and how this generates so much heat that it "uses" cooling water by just boiling it until it vapourizes.

I then explained the current business model and how the companies currently burn through their cash to be the last one standing on the market when everyone else dropped out or became bankrupt. What we user pay for using this and what we actually would have to (and in the future probably will) pay for this service.

Needless to say, my kid is not a big fan now.

I’m reading this book now and it feels like the author was meant to be a john hodgman but that career path was sadly not yet available
Here it is. Asus Eee PC 1005HA running #NetBSD 10.1. Desktop looks awful and that's fine, I do not need "ricing". I have changed HDD to SSD and put new fan. RAM upgraded to 2 GB which is more than I need. Runs dillo and aerc. Cost? ~40 USD.

Another AI argument: "I'm studying Japanese and asked Claude to make flashcards based on the grammar points in my Japanese textbook, and it did in minutes what it would have taken me hours"

What if I told you that the act of making the flashcards is studying? When I went through the Naval Nuclear Program I went through a very similar process of making flashcards for all the things we would be tested on. I never actually had to use the cards. Making them was all I needed to do to sufficiently remember.

There is no way to optimize your way out of the learning process. It always takes the same amount of effort in the end.

No, I’ve visited your fucking website for the last time.

What a surprise! My favorite sticker maker, MakeStickers, featured my stickers with their How Its Made-style video. So honored!
