Note that the size of this increase in Humpbacks off the BC coast cannot be population growth alone (post whaling). There must also be a shift from somewhere.

To date, there is no solid estimate for the number of Humpbacks in all BC waters. A line-transect survey was done but this was when conditions were highly variable. Research, including that done by the collaboration through @HappyWhale, indicated that Humpback recovery was significantly impacted by the Marine Heatwave 2014 to 2016.

Knowing where, when, and who the Humpbacks are is essential to the work to reduce threats. In addition to informing our research and education, the data feeds into the efforts of the Canadian Pacific Humpback Collaboration (which we coordinate) and research across the North Pacific.

We also share this to highlight how vigilant boaters must be, and how coastal British Columbians can help with reporting sightings, violations, and incidents of concern. Please see www.SeeABlowGoSlow.org.

Summary of MERS 2024 Humpback ID data (to date).

Many thanks to all who shared photos and helped these efforts, adding significantly to what ID data we were able to collect to help the whales and boater safety.

If you provided us with data in 2024, we sent you an email today with some special information.

See comments for details.
