I gave my site a little refresh. New colors, logotype, illustrations. New ways to talk about what I do. And I’m posting my artwork now, too. Take a peek!

Applications are now open for the Wine Writers' Symposium, an outstanding four-day immersion in the craft of #wine #writing, its praxis and poetics.

Twenty-four applicants will be accepted based on a blind assessment of their original essay, personal statement, and demonstrated commitment to the profession.

I'm a past symposiast and will be faculty at this event, and I cannot wait to engage with you all.

I routinely advocate for a fresh look at wine lexicons so was thrilled to be a guest on the terrific Wine Blast podcast, sharing my thoughts on a term we wine writers love to hate and hate to love, "minerality.”

The Mystery of Minerality - Wine Blast podcast with Susie & Peter

Minerality. What does it mean? What causes it?! Where did the word come from?! We enlist the help of experts & examine our own language too.

I've been traveling on and off this spring, busy planting my garden and also researching wine lexicons! Here's a snap of me taken on a recent boating excursion on Lago di Trasimeno in Umbria, Italy.

This is the second year I’ve overwintered lettuce and spinach in NH. I direct-seed in late August, covering the rows with hoops and plastic in Oct. By March the soil starts to thaw and, critically, day length is sufficient to stimulate new growth. By late April I get leaves, and by mid-May there’s enough for a big daily bowlful of greens. Meanwhile, newer seedlings will start yielding in about four weeks. Bonus interloper onions in the row, too.

Since the bobcat photos were so welcome, here are a few more (and more to come! — I took a lot). This is "The Yawn."

This bobcat spent two hours hunting in our yard yesterday. Such a privilege to be in its presence for so long.

Last week marked the 15th anniversary of my publication, Terroir Review.

It launched quietly in 2008, but within a year I had started to connect with the #wine community. I was invited to write for other outlets, travel to wine regions, even to work at a California winery.

Now the focus is on narratives about people and place, food and terroir, and I'm launching more evergreen and educational content. It feels like exactly what I should be doing right now.
