The Eight of Cups: Indolence

"Fast by her Side a listless Maiden pin'd,
With aching Head, and squeamish Heart-Burnings;
Pale, bloated, cold, she seem'd to hate Mankind,
Yet lov'd in Secret all forbidden Things."
— from The Castle of Indolence by James Thomson

The darkest night, so deep and still
We light a fire, to stave off the chill
The new moon is hidden, down below
The clouds, our only nightly show

Though we may stumble, through the night
We remain strong, amid lack of light
For when morning sun, rises anew
It will bring forth the day, so true

Night will dissolve, and be gone
As the sun ascends, on a new dawn
May courage not wane, in the dark
For fire, will always, remain our spark

Thought Forms

The influence of #theosophy and other forms of occultism on modern abstract art is a subject very much close to my heart. Though unlike Mondrian, Kandinsky was never a member of the theosophical society, but he was very much conversant with the works of #Blavatsky, #AnnieBesant, #Leadbetter, and #Steiner.

This Gary Lachman article gives a good introduction: https://www.theosophical.org/publications/quest-magazine/1405-kandinskys-thought-forms-and-the-occult-roots-of-modern-art

Kandinsky's Thought Forms and the Occult Roots of Modern Art

IN RECENT YEARS, the contribution that occult or mystical ideas have made to the evolution of art—or to culture in general—has been increasingly recognized. But this was not always the case. For a long time, the notion that belief systems like Theosophy, founded in 1875 by Madame Blavatsky and her companion Colonel Henry Steel Olcott, were anything more than a disreputable side-show to the mainstream of cultural development was scandalous...

The Lure of the Occult

Here's an article in #churchtimes by #RichardYader about #occultism practiced within Anglo-Catholic circles during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Though maybe a little snooty in tone, it gives an informed and informative overview of one of the more little known aspects of western esotericism.

On the wings of the Dawn — the lure of the Occult

Anglo-Catholic involvement in the occult is much broader and deeper than most would suspect, writes Richard Yoder
