So one thing about the US is that when anybody proposed socializing retirement and health care we get ghouls coming out of the woodwork to ask in bad faith how we'd pay for something so extravagant (that everybody else already has).

In the US, if you have benefits you get a sort of shared-cost system where some money goes to socialized benefits and some to private. Going full social just means you and your employer pay into the social pool instead of the private pool and then EVERYBODY gets it.

The deed is done. Time to feed the cats, shower and go to bed.

I normally wouldn't work out so late but I want to get some more hour+ rides to get ready for the Revolutionary Ramble. I'm hoping this can be my first 50 mile ride.

View of the Philadelphia skyline from the Camden Aquarium. The long blue line is a project to lid I-95 and create a massive park on the waterfront abutting Old Town.

It's unbelievable how squandered this precious waterfront has been since the interstate was put in. This is where Philly began. Even though the street grid was planned in advance the city grew up along the waterfront and Market St.

My wife was complaining that her phone case wasn't fitting her phone anymore. The plastic didn't seem that warped.

However, her phone ...

I keep going back and forth about whether I prefer Rage with the original textures or with the "detail texture" feature. It certainly looks sharper but there's always a little voice in the back of my head reminding me that it's not "real" detail. It's just a combination of upscale, sharpening and noise.

Megatextures had too many problems to stick around, I know, but those are some hella good NPC textures for 2011.

According to the copyright date on the packaging, someone in my office has been holding on to these for 30 years and they finally decided that today's the day to get rid of them.

I got my Chimera OS box up and running and spent the afternoon with Rage. It's still incredibly impressive compared to its contemporaries, but it's hurt a lot by not being able to have an HDR megatexture. It often feels like it's fighting its own limitations.

But, hey, no other game gave us full global illumination like this until RTGI became a reality.

On my bike ride today I was trying to work on getting more aero/less upright. I'm sure it looked like I was trying very hard - so I guess this guy decided to show off too.

YouTube has added an AI sparkle button. When you hover over it, it doesn't say what it does.

It's amazing to me how often this is the way companies roll out AI features. They don't announce them, and they almost try to *trick* you into using them by mistake.
