New review paper in J Phon! “Advancement of phonetics in the 21st century: Exemplar models of speech production” w/ Jennifer Cole. Free for 50 days here: https://authors.elsevier.com/a/1hCZjLixzvfjs and always free at https://faculty.wcas.northwestern.edu/matt-goldrick/publications/pdfs/GoldrickColeMS.pdf. We review the theoretical and empirical context leading up to the introduction of exemplar models, the empirical challenges to the first generation of models, and current challenges to hybrid exemplar-symbolic accounts.

Really hoping to invite some folks in my network from some less commonly covered topics in cogsci for a zoom colloquium presentation this fall, ideally postdocs I think. If this fits you DM me?

Correcting for conceptual and methodological errors in a recent meta-analysis by Gade et al., we find that this shrinkage replicates widely across studies, and extends to reading aloud of mixed language paragraphs. In our view these data provide striking, replicable, reliable, and strong evidence that inhibition is a requisite part of any theory of language control. One of many open challenges: understanding how it works in concert with other mechanisms to facilitate language control. 3/3
Bilinguals name pictures faster in whatever language is dominant. But when forced to switch languages repeatedly, the dominant language advantage shrinks. Some bilinguals over-compensate, inhibiting the dominant language so much that language dominance reverses. This striking dominance reversal is the tip of the iceberg of an inhibitory control process aimed at reducing the dominant advantage to make switching languages easier. 2/
