I finally deleted #Threads recently because their algorithm is annoying, they gave up on #fediverse support, and their app is loaded with UX dark patterns.

I still use #Instagram because the people I meet in person do, and organizing https://photostroll.nyc kinda requires it.

Fedi is the only place I really feel good about posting on, because I know where data lives and how it's distributed, it's community-run, and usually it's by the type of people I'd want running my virtual social space.

NYC Photo Stroll

A meetup for and by the NYC-area photography community.

The point I'm at in life right now is that I'd rather be in real life than virtual. I get more satisfaction from human interactions than cyber ones. It's making it hard to exist in cyberspace, which overwhelms me, than meatspace, which is where I'm finding peace right now.

More Codeslop, Please

Well, they’ve finally done it. Through raw force of will and more money than god, the nerds have finally done something that will “make the world a better place.” By that, I mean they’ve pooped out something will finally change the world in big ways, for better and worse.

As an early AI critic, I say this now, because the spicy autocomplete app finally excreted some text I could use, in the form of computer code that actually compiles. The AI hype prophesy made only five short years ago, that “it’ll be better tomorrow,” has finally come true.

Silicon Valley - Making the World a Better Place

YouTube

I've been wanting to write an essay on my thoughts on AI for a while now, after all these years in the hype cycle, drowning in slop.

So yesterday I finally sat down and wrote a long one summing up my criticisms and current outlook, after using the dumb clanker to vibe-code something that actually kinda worked for the first time.

Still some light editing to do, but I'll share soon.

(and my creaky bones)
Only remembering my age these days thanks to the shifting targeted advertisements I receive on my personal ad device.

Met up with @[email protected] for a mini Longformers reunion ✍️

Lots of discussion about Writefreely, NodeBB, WordPress, Ghost, contexts, group federation, and much more.

Who else is in Montreal for #FediMTL? Let's meet up! I'm around until Wednesday.

Introducing Write.as Memberships

It’s been six years since the first time we celebrated our years of existence on the web by launching our long-term Pro plan.

Today, with hundreds of long-term subscribers, we’re putting a new coat of paint on this option, and renaming it Write.as Memberships, to reflect what you get with a 5-year Pro subscription: extra perks, and a lasting spot among a community of writers in our cozy little corner of the independent web.

Write.as users can check out the revamped Membership section (previously called “Long Subscriptions”) today.

Posting to the masses instead of texting a friend who would understand is just crowdsourcing human connection. Send toot.
